Research Interests

Wetland ecology, forested wetlands, wetland habitat management, and wetland wildlife.

 Our (me and my students) research tends to focus on important conservation issues that deal with wetlands and wetland-dependent wildlife, particularly waterbirds. We use a systems-based perspective of wetlands to understand the important biotic and abiotic processes in these systems and how current or proposed alterations can improve or degrade wetlands or the organisms dependent upon them.

We work (or have worked) in floodplains in the eastern and western U.S., rice fields, crawfish ponds, and coastal marshes and work/have worked with Whooping and Sandhill Cranes, songbirds, King Rails and other secretive marshbirds. We frequently work in interdisciplinary teams with hydrologists, landscape ecologists, land resource managers, soil scientists, foresters, and invertebrate ecologists. We also work closely with state and federal resource management agencies to identify current and emerging issues and to transfer knowledge from our research and their experiences.
