Mission Statement
The LSU School of Theatre & Film is dedicated to preparing students of all identities
for professional and academic careers in arts and cultural industries. Providing
an inclusive learning environment as a key to a well-rounded humanities education,
we offer a variety of degrees and concentrations that encourage students to tailor
their training to their creative and scholarly passions and intentions. Graduating
students move into careers and further educational institutions as informed and empowered
artists, theorists, and technicians. The practical skills learned apply not only to
the arts but also to multiple related professions and industries.
Accomplished creative practitioners from all over the world contribute to the School’s
cultural insight and cutting-edge performance tools. Our programming commits to spotlighting
topical issues, celebrating shared social values, and exploring humanity. We work
to honor the experiences, perspectives and unique identities of all our students,
faculty, staff, guest artists and audience. The School also has a unique and significant
place within Louisiana State University and seeks to contribute in a visible way
to the quality of life and economic growth of both the state and the region.

LSU Cares
LSU Cares is a university initiative dedicated to the well-being of students and promotion of a community that cares about each of its members. Using a CARE (Communicate, Assess, Refer, Educate) approach, staff review reports and provide appropriate resources in response. LSU Cares works with students to empower them to help students of concern and engage with victim support and advocacy resources.

LSU is co-leading a new $4 million National Science Foundation (NSF) Focused EPSCoR Collaboration (FEC) award that connects Louisiana’s deltaic wetlands with Rhode Island’s salt marshes to build tools for coastal planning that work in both—and, the team hopes, in coastal systems nationwide.

As NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope prepares for launch Aug. 30, LSU scientists are ready to turn years of preparation into discovery. LSU astronomer Matthew Penny helped shape Roman’s science goals and a major survey that will search for new worlds near the center of the Milky Way. With four LSU-led projects receiving about $900,000 in funding, researchers will use Roman to study planets, stars, black holes and neutron stars—while connecting the mission to LSU’s astronomical legacy and training the next generation of researchers.
Max Salvant was frustrated. Not by his class schedule or studies but by his notebooks. Three times a week, the LSU architecture student juggled a sketchbook for one class and two or three additional different-sized notebooks for other courses. Toting the unwieldy pile around between classes without something sliding out and falling to the ground required a series of awkward adjustments.
LSU herpetologist Chris Austin and collaborators have identified a new snake species from New Guinea, Lielaphis slashi, named for Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash. Austin first encountered the nonvenomous groundsnake during a 2006 expedition, but it took nearly two decades of genetic and physical analysis to confirm it as a species new to science. The discovery adds to Austin’s more than three decades of fieldwork documenting New Guinea’s biodiversity and his career total of 53 newly described species.
