Biomedical Engineering Research

Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and design to medicine and biology for healthcare purposes.  At LSU, several of our research labs focus on the following specializations:

  • Cellular & Molecular Engineering
  • Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine
  • Nanoparticle Targeted Delivery
  • Cancer Therapy
  • Cardiovascular Engineering

Cellular & Molecular Engineering

Principal Investigator: W. Todd Monroe, Ph.D., P.E.

Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine

Principal Investigator: Philip Jung, Ph.D.

Nanoparticle Drug Delivery

Principal Investigator: Cristina Sabliov, Ph.D.

Polymeric nanoparticles can be synthesized from a multitude of synthetic and natural polymers with physically entrapped or covalently attached bioactive (e.g. drug, agrochemical). Research pursued in this laboratory is focused on engineering nanoparticles to possess specific physical-chemical characteristics (e.g. size or surface properties). The nanodelivery systems are designed to protect and provide the desired release kinetics of the bioactive, to be biodegradable, have a minimum to no environmental impact, and enhance the bioavailability and effectiveness of the drug/agrochemical.

Cancer Therapy

Principal Investigator: Qi Cai, Ph.D

Cancer ranks among the leading causes of death globally. Despite the significant progress made in recent decades in the treatment of many types of cancer, effective therapies are still lacking for certain forms of the disease, such as glioblastoma. To improve the treatment outcomes for cancer patients, preclinical research aims to understand the causes of cancer, develop innovative approaches to reduce cancer incidence, develop and evaluate novel therapies, and identify potent treatment strategies for clinical testing.

Cardiovascular Engineering

Principal Investigator: Bruno V. Rego, Ph.D.

Cardiovascular engineering is a branch of biomedical engineering that focuses on the development of models, technologies, and devices related to the heart, heart valves, and/or blood vessels. Research in this area aims to improve the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, heart valve dysfunction, arrhythmia, atherosclerosis, and aneurysm.
