The Department is home to over 900 undergraduate majors and nearly 40 graduate students. They study with 26 faculty who are well known scholars in various fields and who are amongst the most honored teachers at this university. James C. Garand named LSU Boyd Professor
The LSU Board of Supervisors has named Dr. James C. Garand as an LSU Boyd Professor,
the university's most distinguished and highest professional rank. Dr. Garand is
an American Politics scholar whose expertise is in public opinion, electoral behavior,
legislative politics, and public policy. He has published over one hundred articles
in academic journals and edited volumes along with two edited books. He is widely
recognized for his scholarly productivity as well as for his dedication to student
achievement. The Southern Political Science Association recently created the "James
C. Garand Mentoring Award" to honor his long-standing commitment to mentorship.
Dr. James R. Stoner is a 2026 recipient of the LSU Distinguished Faculty Award, one of the university's highest honors for faculty, recognizing sustained records of excellence in teaching, research, service, and/or any combination of the three.
Dr. Kathleen Bratton is being awarded the 2025 Jewell Enduring Contribution Award for her article with Kerry Haynie titled "Agenda-Setting and Legislative Success in State Legislatures: The Effects of Gender and Race" published in The Journal of Politics in 1999. The award was given to a book or article that stands as an enduring contribution to the political science literature.
Graduate student, Cana Kim, has been awarded an LSU Dissertation Fellowship for the Academic Year 2022-2023 for her dissertation titled, "Foreign State Images and Public Opinion toward Public Policy."
