Course Descriptions

SCRN 4046 | German Film

Gundela Hachmann

Step outside the familiar comfort of Hollywood blockbusters and explore the dreamy darkness and penetrating gazes of a cinematic tradition that seeks to come to terms with a history of both deeply troubling violence and awe-inspiring resilience. This course tells the fascinating story of German film. From groundbreaking classics of the Weimar era like Metropolis and M, which are regularly featured on rankings of the best films of all  time, to the powerful propaganda of Nazi cinema, the incredible creativity of the post war generation of filmmakers like Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog, and recent successes by up-and-coming directors, students can get to know and enjoy an
inspiring variety of styles and voices in filmmaking.

All films will be available with English subtitles through online streaming services, mostly LSU’s Kanopy. Class discussions and assignments are in English. Students of German have the option to do work in German, if desired
