Course Descriptions

SCRN 3501| Middle Eastern Cinema: Identities in Motion

Touria Khannous

This course is an introduction to contemporary North African cinema covering the period from after the 1930s to the present in countries including Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. We will particularly focus on the different images of the body represented in North African cinema. Main topics are the cinematic body, gendered bodies, migrant bodies, body and trauma, religious bodies, and bodies and revolution. We will also analyze the representation of the North African body through the European gaze (e.g., Pépé le Moko), which imagined the region as a landscape of desire and danger. The course’s theoretical framework includes readings by film critics like Laura Mulvey, Hamid Naficy and Laura Marks.

 SCRN 4001|The French Film

Kevin Bongiorni

This course will examine French film from its inception with the Lumière brothers and Georges Méliès to Amour and Agnès Varda’s Visages Villages. It will approach films from a variety of perspectives and contexts including historical, cultural, literary and film technique.  The course is not a lecture course but is designed around a seminar format.  Students will be actively involved in each class meeting and will be responsible for leading and contributing to class discussions. Each week students will have reading and film viewing assignments to be done at home. As this is the only course at LSU taught with the specific subject of French Film it is designed as a general survey course of French national cinema.  The goal is to provide students with a background in the history, movements, styles and cultural contexts in which the French film has developed and is developing.  With this knowledge students will not only have better tools for understanding French film, but it is hoped that it will contribute to their skills in understanding cinema itself and other aesthetic phenomena.

SCRN 3505| 21st Century Horror

June Pulliam

21st century horror is more than just the same old monsters reinvented for a new century. Films such as Weapons, IT, The Babadook, and It Follows have their own unclassifiable monsters, while movies like Titane, Dumplings, and The Skin I Live In push the boundaries of the genre. Get Out, Sinister, and The Taking of Deborah Logan explore the unique fears of this century, while other 21st century horror films such as Pontypool, Midsommar, The Host, and Sinners offer fresh version of old familiar monsters.
