The Petroleum Engineering Research, Training, and Testing (PERTT) Laboratory hosts two of the five undergraduate laboratories in the undergraduate program.
Petroleum Engineering 3037 and Petroleum Engineering 4060 are both hosted at the PERTT facility, with 3037 focusing on field operations to include gas migration demonstrations, safety valve operation, and gas flow calculations; while PETE 4060 (blowout prevention) offers field equipment identification, accumulator system operation, kill fluid calculation and demonstration, pump startup and operation, and finally blowout prevention with a full scale gas kick identification and mitigation experiment. This has proven to be one of the most appealing and valuable experiences that LSU’s young engineers take with them into their industry careers. As a result, alumni have often expanded the professional network of the PERTT Laboratory and opened new opportunities for tool/technology testing, and industry partnership.
