Training
The Petroleum Engineering Research, Training, and Testing Laboratory has an excellent infrastructure for well-control training. Our partners at BP, Wild Well Control, Randy Smith Well Control Training (now Intertek), and Smith Mason & Co. have utilized the PERTT Lab (formerly referred to as The Well Control School) over the years to educate their trainees both in the onsite classroom(s) with textbook curriculum, in the computer lab with drilling simulators (currently DS-5s by DrillSIM), and on the full scale research and training equipment. Our full scale system is comprised of Halliburton HT-400 cement pumps circulating fresh water and nitrogen through a 2800’ deep or 5000’ deep fully cased well, a choke manifold with MI-Swaco drilling chokes and choke consoles as well as a Safekick MPD choke and controller, with Pason Integrated Drilling Data Solutions instrumentation and displays. The full scale circulation exercises are unique to this facility and provide the trainees an immersive experience where they can be taught pump and choke management in a full scale, blowout prevention demonstration. This facility has trained and prepared countless oil and gas associates over the past 40 years. More recently, we have partnered with Smith Mason & Co to offer IADC certifications for different levels of well control training. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions or inquiries about well control training.
